Today was election day at the Beirut Bar Association. Lawyers have been a vital and resilient element of the revolution so far, they provide pro-bono legal support for protestors being prosecuted and terrorized for practicing their constitutionally protected rights. (list of support/hotlines here)
اليوم شهدنا انتخابات نقابة المحامين في بيروت. يلعب المحامون في لبنان دوراً أساسياً في دعم الثورة، من تقديم ندوات عن حقوق الشعب المدنية المحفوظة بالقانون والدستور، كما المرافعة وتقديم الشكاوى الرسمية لحماية حق الاعتصام وحرية التعبير. (قائمة بالخدمات القانونية المجانية هنا)
First some important notes before the election bit أولاً بعض النقاط المهمة قبل الانتخابات

The Tripoli Bar Association joined the revolution, and strike since the first week of movements, and provides pro-bono services to the protestors
However in Beirut, Lawyers were providing legal support in groups not directly through the syndicate, while the syndicate’s president was acting in opposition to the protestors demands. He also warned lawyers from wearing their official robe to represent their stature in protest areas and threatened lawyers that disobeyed, as well as attempting to delay the syndicate elections for one year.
The real breaking point was that the syndicate’s President had appointed lawyers to represent the protestors that were arrested in Tyre and were to present in Court on the 14th of November, only to arrive at the court and find out that the syndicate had faxed the court (yes, faxed) and withdrew the appointment of the lawyers. Which of course caused major outrage. Tripoli’s syndicate volunteered it’s lawyers for the court-case immediately after.
The following day, 15 November, lawyers protested in their robes in front of the Justice Palace in response to the unusual appointment-withdrawal and other biased practices.
Needless to say the timing of the election & the behavior of the syndicate was ideal to promote a fresh and independent leadership.

In the first round of votes the top candidates were: Melhem Khalaf, Pierre Hanna, Nader Casbar, Saadeddine Al Khatib and Ibrahim Muslim, which led to the political parties to re-align themselves behind one candidate, Nader Casbar, to ensure maximum votes against Melhem.

Update 18 November: Since the order of the political parties was to unify behind one candidate, the younger generations were offended and found that that agreement is offensive to their political opposition. It is common for avid enemies to unite in elections to ensure independents that they cannot influence don’t make it
تحديث يوم 18 تشرين ثاني: عندما اتفق الأحزاب المتحاربة سياسياً على توحيد الأصوات خلف نادر كسبار استفز الموضوع بعض من المحامين الشباب الذي وجدوا أن الوحدة لدعم مرشح أحزاب لا يتوافقون معها سياسياً هو خيانة لمبادئهم. هكذا قرار ليس غيباً في الانتخابات النقابية وغيرها، واعتدنا على أحزاب السلطة الاتحاد ضد المستقلين لضمان ممثلين لهم يستطيعون التأثير عليهم مستقبلاً
Regardless, Melhem Khalaf still won with a vote count of 2341 ballots

Afterwhich, the political parties began their “coup” attempt on the winner, each claiming that he was always their number one choice… and the first was Samy Gemayel seen in this picture trying to embrace Melhem

Post Election: the new syndicate head shared posts across platforms of his team cleaning the paper trail of his competitors since he ran a paperless campaign. The environmental impact of every action is no longer an after-thought nor ignored.
بعد الانتخابات: ينشر رئيس النقابة الجديد منشورات على مواقع التواصل لفريقه وهم يقومون بتنظيف المخلفات الورقية التي غطت أرض القاعة والتي استعملها خصوم النقيب لحملاتهم الانتخابية، مشيراً لأن حملته اعتمدت على المواقع والأدوات الرقمية بحتاً في حملاتها. أصبح للأثر البيئي وقع فعلي على القرارات التي يتخذها الفرد المسؤول في المجتمع
